Some records involving the family of Delila J. Thompson (1845-1931, (daughter of James H. Thompson and Angeline Thaxton, granddaughter of Benjamin D. Note:  Although Delila’s death record identified her husband as Wells Wallace West, we are using Wells Wallis West as the correct name because that is apparently how he identified himself in an unpublished autobiography written ca 1921-22.  This autobiography is non-circulating at the Bancroft Library, University of California-Berkeley.  If anyone has a copy, we would love to see it.

Wells Wallis (or Wallace) West was my great-grandfather. My father was Weldon Wallace West. He was the subject of a book, “West to Gold and Glory: On thenOregon Trail with Wells Wallis West”, by the West Historians and Authors of Modesto.

To learn more about Wells Wallace West and the trip to California, see “To the Land of Gold and Wickedness: The 1848-59 Diary of Lorena L. Hays” by Jeanne Hamilton Watson. It is excellent and is available from Amazon.com. A copy of Wells biography was deposited in the Bancroft Library years ago. I did not find it on-line. Contact the Bancroft to see it.
