Paper: Daily Oklahoman, The (Oklahoma City, OK)
Deceased: Jim A. Egan
Date: November 4, 2004

Jim A. Egan, outstanding civic leader and former mayor of Muskogee, past president of H.B. Egan Manufacturing Company, dedicated Methodist Churchman, and caring philanthropist, died on October 30, 2004 at the age of 98.  Jim was born June 30, 1906 in Coweta, Oklahoma to Henry Bakewell Egan and Addie Caroline Jaco Egan.  In 1915, his parents moved to Muskogee, a city he served and loved for 89 years.  Jim graduated from Muskogee Central High School where he played on the football team and was captain of the basket ball team.  He married Violet Ann Thaxton on June 24, 1926 in Vinita, Oklahoma. They were married 72 years until her death in February 1998.  Life didn’t stop here for Jim and on August 14, 1999, he married Edna Kneisel of Sabetha, Kansas.  Edna and her husband, Otto, had been friends of Jim and Violet for 25 years when they all wintered together in McAllen, Texas.

For nearly 40 years, Jim Egan operated the H. B. Egan Manufacturing Company, a firm founded by his father in 1925.  After the company was sold in 1961, Mr. Egan founded the Camelletta Corporation, built the Broadway Shopping Center and remained president of The Teganok Corporation Ltd. of Toronto, Canada. During his life time, Mr. Egan compiled an impressive record of community service. He served on the boards of the Community Chest, Salvation Army, Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Goodwill Industries, and for more than 33 years served as a Director of the First National Bank & Trust Company.  He was the second president of the Muskogee Knife & Fork Club and was chosen 1960’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year besides receiving the Outstanding Boss Award. Two years later he ran for Mayor of Muskogee and served three successful terms before stepping down in 1968.  During his administration, the Civic Center & Fine Arts Auditorium were built and other municipal improvement projects were begun.  One of the state’s most outstanding Methodist Lay Leaders, Mr. Egan was a member of First United Methodist Church in Muskogee all his life and served as its Official Board Chairman for more than 20 years.  He’s a past president of the Board of Trustees of Oklahoma City University and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the university in 1964.  He served on the Board of Trustees for 20 years at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and also was a former Trustee of Bacone College in Muskogee.  Mr. Egan was a delegate for many years to the General and World Conferences of the Methodist Church and served on their various boards and committees.  Jim Egan felt his church work was the most important part of his life. He said in one article written about him in 1955, “My Christian experience teaches me that all material things come from God and belong to God. I’m just a steward temporarily of the things sent my way.” In 1945, he and his father bought a large parcel of land outside of Tahlequah, Oklahoma on the Barron Fork River and gave it to the Methodist Church to be developed as a summer camp for Methodist young people in Oklahoma.  This summer camp was named Camp Egan in honor of Mr. Egan and has served and enriched the lives of thousands of young people as well as adults through all these years. Mr. Egan continued to financially support Camp Egan all during his lifetime and will continue to do so even after his death.  He leaves a great legacy for all those who hear God’s call to serve, to share and to love!

Mr. Egan is survived by his wife, Edna; his daughter and son in law, Caroline and Vince Wayland of Boulder, Colorado; and his daughter in law, Jerry Egan of Rio Rancho, New Mexico.  He leaves six grandchildren; Robert Bowles, Carol Jensen, Elizabeth Bowles, Cynthia Wissel, Alison Egan, and Suzanne Carey and ten great grandchildren.  He also leaves three stepdaughters; Judy and Dennis Crouch, Betty and Kenneth Adams, and Karen and David Randall; eight step grandchildren and 11 step great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Cornelia Belle Heisley as well as his beloved son, James Albert Egan who died in 1981.  Friends may wish to remember Mr. Egan by making a memorial contribution to First United Methodist Church, 600 E. The strange case of the State of Tennessee v. Benjamin Franklin Thaxton (Clarksville, TN 1883)

This is one of the more entertaining Thaxton finds.  In 1883, Benjamin Franklin Thaxton (b. ~1860; son of unknown and Susan Thaxton) of Butler Co., Kentucky, Logan Co., Kentucky, and Clarksville, Montgomery Co., Tennessee, was accused of attempted murder and robbery, based partly on information from his wife, Purity Elizabeth Hooser, who said Benjamin was a “consummate villain and ought to be hung on general principles.”

Another key piece of evidence was that Purity’s brother-in-law William Taylor was killed in the robbery – or was he?  And when Thaxton was arrested at the home of his brother-in-law Dillard Sanders, how did he explain that bullet hole in his vest?  It’s pretty interesting reading.  Click on the PDF link below.

Numerous Logan Co., KY, and Montgomery Co., TN residents are mentioned.  From Montgomery County:  Jeff J. Garrott (Garrett) and his wife; John Tandy; Dr. Neville; Dr. Bailey; Dr. Beaumont; [Mr.] W. J. MacCormac; James T. Wood; William Fassbender; Thomas Wenzler; Walter Scott; Elizabeth Hooser Thaxton and her two children; Capt. or Chief of Police Carkuff (Carcuff); Judge Tyler; Attorney General Burney; Col. T. L. Yancey; William C. Smith, Esq.; Major Tom Henry; J. P. Smith; John Barry; T. L. Shyerer or Shierey and wife; Lewis Lowe.

From Logan County:  William Taylor and his father; Sheriff R. M. Warden; Dillard M. Sanders and Mrs. Sanders; Will O. Ackerman and Mrs. Ackerman (Akerman); David Ackerman or Dan Ackerman; Julius Ackerman; Mrs. Mason and daughter Belle Mason; Miss Lyon (Lyons); Tom Lyon; James W. Benton; Monroe Hardy; [Mr.] Joslin; Ed Short; Joe Murphey; Josh Binkley (Binkly or Benkley); Henry Harris.

Benjamin Franklin Thaxton and the Garrott burglary

One more piece of the puzzle: Taylor’s cousin was hanged at around the same time. From the Newark Daily Advocate, 26 Nov 1883:

Burglar’s Pal Arrested. NASHVILLE, Tenn. Benjamin F. Thaxton, a saddler, was arrested here and identified as a “pal” of a burglar killed at New Providence Saturday. Thaxton’s wife recognized the dead burglar as Wm. Taylor, a cousin of Andy Taylor, hanged at London Friday.
